Al-Ameed University continues to strengthen its contribution to sustainable development through cooperation with government institutions, universities, international partners, non-governmental organisations and community institutions. These partnerships support the University’s wider role in addressing social, health, educational and environmental challenges through planning, research, knowledge exchange, training and community engagement.
Government and Strategic Engagement
During 2025, Al-Ameed University contributed its academic and institutional expertise to initiatives involving government institutions and sustainable development planning. In June 2025, the University organised a specialised workshop on the preparation of five-year institutional plans, bringing together participants from government bodies including the Karbala Planning Department and municipality. The programme addressed strategic planning methods, SWOT analysis, the identification of strengths and weaknesses, and mechanisms for developing effective institutional plans.
The University has also participated in activities involving the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Iraqi universities concerning mechanisms for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals within higher education institutions. Through such engagement, Al-Ameed contributes to discussions on institutional challenges, planning approaches and strategies that support the implementation of sustainable development at university and community level.
Cross-Sector Dialogue for Sustainable Development
Al-Ameed University actively creates and participates in forums that bring together different sectors to discuss challenges related to sustainable development.
In February 2025, Al-Ameed University and the University of Karbala organised the First Scientific Conference on Sustainable Development, providing a platform for academics and researchers to discuss mechanisms and practical approaches for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
Throughout the year, the University also collaborated with government directorates, educational institutions and community organisations on initiatives addressing environmental protection, education, public safety, health and social wellbeing. Examples included cooperation with the Karbala Agriculture Directorate on environmental and tree-planting activities, the Karbala Education Directorate on addressing bullying in schools, and Civil Defence authorities on fire safety and emergency preparedness.
The University additionally participated in wider national and international forums where health, education and community challenges were discussed with researchers, professionals and institutional partners.
International Research and Data Collaboration
International research collaboration represents another important element of Al-Ameed University’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals.
University researchers have participated in international collaborative research addressing health and wellbeing in humanitarian and conflict-affected settings. This work involved collaboration with international academic and humanitarian partners and the collection and analysis of data relating to health workers and communities operating in challenging humanitarian environments.
Such research contributes to the international evidence base used to understand health and wellbeing challenges, assess conditions across different settings and inform future interventions. It also enables Al-Ameed researchers to contribute to the measurement and understanding of issues directly connected with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being.
International Knowledge Exchange and Best Practice
Al-Ameed University also uses international partnerships and scientific collaboration to exchange knowledge, compare approaches and strengthen professional and institutional practice.
In 2025, the University participated in the World Health Summit in Berlin, where international health institutions, universities and specialists discussed global health challenges, responsibilities and approaches to improving health systems and cooperation.
The Third Al-Ameed International Conference for Medical Sciences, held in November 2025, further supported international scientific exchange. The conference attracted more than 200 researchers from Iraq and abroad and included participation from countries across the Middle East, Europe, Asia and North America. Researchers exchanged ideas and reviewed contemporary medical, therapeutic and diagnostic developments, supporting the transfer of knowledge and the identification of approaches that can contribute to improving healthcare and medical education.
The University’s academic partnerships with international universities and professional institutions also support research cooperation, training, academic exchange and the sharing of approaches to health and education.
Partnerships with Non-Governmental Organisations
Al-Ameed University works with non-governmental and community organisations to address sustainable development priorities through volunteering, research and education.
Student and community volunteering initiatives support vulnerable groups and contribute to humanitarian, health and social programmes. Cooperation with social-care and charitable organisations has provided opportunities for students and University departments to participate in awareness activities and community support.
The University also participates in research involving humanitarian and non-governmental partners, allowing its researchers to contribute to studies addressing health and wellbeing challenges in humanitarian contexts.
In the area of education and training, Al-Ameed University jointly develops and delivers awareness and training activities with community organisations. In July 2025, the Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing cooperated with Hasad Al-Noor Organisation for Education Development to provide theoretical and practical training in first aid and mass-casualty medicine. The programme prepared participants to contribute effectively to medical and community services during large public gatherings.
Similar cooperation with social-care organisations has supported awareness, counselling and educational activities addressing humanitarian and community needs.
Through these partnerships, Al-Ameed University continues to connect academic knowledge with practical action, strengthening cooperation across government, academia, international institutions and civil society in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
