RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Master Degree project: Histopathology Department - Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College / London / UK (Nov 2004 - Nov 2005).

Thesis: Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Observations on the Fetal Gut.

Supervisor: Professor Gordon Stamp, Chairman of the Histopathology Department, Hammersmith Hospital London.

Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM) is a new optical imaging technique, capable of studying the natural biochemical contents of cells and tissues, translating them into a contrast image, the equivalent of histological special staining without the stain. My work was focused on the human fetal gastrointestinal system with different gestational ages. The main aims were to study the structural development of fetal human tissues, also to obtain normally looking FLIM data of the GIT in order to use them in the near future with the FLIM endoscopic applications of the human adult. My tissue preparations were done in the Hammersmith Hospital London. My laboratory work was in the Department of Physics/Photonics, Imperial College London.

In conclusion, FLIM was able to produce a contrast in fixed normal fetal human tissue from the gastrointestinal system. Furthermore, the FLIM data collected from imaging the fetal GIT tract may be beneficial in the near future when FLIM becomes available with the endoscopic applications.
