Skills Lab

The Skills Laboratory focuses on:

Faculty members and teaching assistants of the College of Nursing at Al-Ameed University train their students practically on the solid scientific foundations of nursing procedures (nursing diagnoses and interventions). Training also includes physical examination procedures performed through the four assessment techniques: auscultation, inspection, palpation, and percussion, as well as primary and secondary surveys. Students are trained to monitor physical activity, collect data (objective and subjective data), and perform measurements such as vital signs assessment (blood pressure, temperature, blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and pain scale).

Students are also trained to administer medications in all forms, including intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SC), intradermal (ID), intraosseous (IO), intracardiac (IC), endotracheal (ETT), nebulizer therapy, and oral medications (PO), etc.

The laboratory also provides training in oxygen administration, calculating oxygen requirements, and choosing appropriate delivery methods (O₂). Students learn how to manage intravenous fluids, calculate fluid amounts based on weight, age, and Body Mass Index (BMI), and monitor input and output (I&O).

Training includes insertion of urinary catheters (Foley catheter), placement of nasogastric tubes (NG tube), nursing interventions related to stoma care, and monitoring of chest tubes.

Students are trained in wound suturing techniques, including simple, complex, approximation, and cosmetic suturing. They also learn burn care, surgical wound dressing, and the management of simple, inflamed, and purulent wounds, in addition to fracture immobilization.

The laboratory prepares students psychologically to interact with hospitalized patients before entering the clinical field, emphasizing the preservation of patient privacy, confidentiality, obtaining patient consent, and involving patients in developing treatment plans.

Laboratory Equipment

The laboratory contains a basic surgical set, training models and mannequins for performing nursing procedures and basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), along with display screens used to present videos, diagrams, and images for practical lectures.

It is worth noting that the Skills Laboratory represents a series of laboratories covering Fundamentals of Nursing, Health Assessment, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatric Nursing, as well as Critical Care.

The College Dean, Assistant Professor Dr. Diaa Kareem Abd Ali Al-Bayati, has assigned a competent team of instructors holding master’s degrees in various nursing specialties, including rare and high-demand fields, with extensive clinical experience in multiple hospitals and medical centers.
